NTP Server Overview
 

SecureSync® combines Spectracom’s precision GPS master clock technology and secure network-centric approach with a compact modular hardware design in a 1RU chassis to result in a powerful, scalable and flexible NTP appliance.

Supporting a wide variety of network synchronization and management protocols, the base model comes with a built-in 10/100 base-T Ethernet port for network management and high-performance NTP which can serve more than 7,500 NTP requests per second. It includes all the latest functions of NTPv4. It can be deployed in combination with other stratum-1 NTP server(s), can be used in a stratum-2 configuration, and can be expanded through option modules.

Options Modules Extend Synchronisation Capability

A unique capability of SecureSync is to add hardware options at initial deployment or later as your network grows. An option adds three (3) 10/100/1000 interfaces to deliver NTP to multiple isolated LAN segments at 1 GigE. Two other options add PTPv2 functionality to the unit. One option is for a configurable master/slave PTP operation over a 10/100 network interface. The other is for PTP grandmaster functionality at 1 GigE. Up to six (6) of either types of ports can be added. Flexible Configuration Provides Reliable, Secure Time

The PRISMA VelaSync’s web-based user interface simplifies the configuration of multiple time sources for resiliency against GPS jamming or spoofing attacks, network issues and equipment failures. For example, the server can be easily setup to use a PTP source as a backup to the on-board GPS and use an NTP source as a cross check. The servers can be setup to back up each other so that if one fails, the time service continues. It includes dual redundant hot-swap power supplies and 1T hard drives.

And now, with the addition of STL, you can augment GNSS signals or cut the cord altogether with an indoor solution.

PRISMA VelaSync

Smart Reference Monitoring

The PRISMA VelaSync uses smart reference monitoring to validate the fidelity of all available references. It does this by actively comparing phase offset of each reference against the primary reference and each other. The phase error validation calculates long-term averages and standard deviations of the phase offset between the monitored external reference and the internal system reference. The standard deviation is used to calculate two validity thresholds; a higher and a lower one (the latter acts as a hysteresis buffer, preventing the status flip/flopping if the actual phase error validation value varies closely around the outer threshold).

Security

Security is a priority within the PRISMA VelaSync and included as part of the standard platform. Capabilities include supporting centralized authentication (LDAP, RADIUS, TACACS+), journaled activity logging, secure protocol support (SSH, HTTPS), and more. Updates are generally released on a quarterly basis, but patches and fixes to major CVE’s are addressed as they are discovered.

Epsilon SAS Switch & Amplifier System

SAS-E is a high performance, highly manageable and reliable solution for distributing time and frequency signals for satcom, digital TV or audio broadcast, microwave links, satellite ground stations applications.

The Epsilon™ Switch and Amplifier System (SAS-E) provides a cost effective way to extend distribution of time and frequency signals (pulse, low phase noise frequency signal, Time of Day), as a signal amplifier. Thanks to analog amplification, SAS-E adds very little phase noise to the input frequency and ensures high RF isolation. It is therefore suitable for reference frequency distribution towards transmitters, up-converters, micro-wave links. Pulse regeneration is transparent to pulse duration and period: SAS-E is therefore suitable for distribution of any pulse encoded signal like 1 pps, DCLS IRIG, etc.

The Model 8230AJ is a high gain (40 dB) GNSS outdoor antenna. Standard or Anti Jam (AJ) Antenna – Which Should I Use?

The standard antenna sees the entire view of sky, equally receiving signals from satellites at the horizon or the zenith and all points in between. However, there is increasing interference in the GNSS L1 band, whether unintentional from other transmitters like communications towers or intentional from illegal “privacy jammers”. The AJ antenna rejects signals for the lower elevation angles – where most of the interference comes from – and only receives signals from the higher elevation angles where the satellites are. Of course, this reduces the number of satellites the receiver will see, but for the timing application, only a few satellites are needed. Moreover, with multi-constellation receivers, there are an increasing number of satellites available. So you get all the performance in timing accuracy you would get with a standard antenna plus 20 dB or more of interference rejection.

Another approach to long cable runs down converts the GPS RF frequency in a specialized roof-top antenna to minimize signal loss and allows RG-58 cable to extend up to 1,500 ft (450 meters). The kit comes with an upconverter that is installed near the GPS receiver.

GPS Antenna In-Line Amplifier

The Model 8227 is a convenient solution when the GPS RF falls below the receiver's recommend minimum input. While the maximum cable length depends on thegain of the antenna, loss of the cable and sensitivity of the receiver, we find that the inline amplifier can extend a cable run by 130 metres.
